Lost Your AirPods Charging Case and No Find My? These Are Your Options

Have you lost just the charging case and can't see it in the Find My app? That's not your mistake: the cases of older AirPods generations have no transmitter of their own and simply cannot report themselves. Find My then shows at best the last known location of your earbuds — not of the empty case. Below: why that is, what you can still try, and what the case solution costs if it's really gone.

Why your case doesn't show up in Find My

Only with the newest generations has Apple made the charging case itself traceable: those cases have their own built-in speaker and report their location independently in the Find My network. With all older models — the standard AirPods 1, 2 and 3, and AirPods Pro with the original case — the case is passive: it has no chip of its own that broadcasts location and no speaker to play a sound.

In concrete terms, that means:

  • If your earbuds are in the case, Find My only shows the place where the earbuds were last connected to your iPhone — a snapshot, not a live location;
  • If the case is empty (earbuds out), it disappears from the radar completely: there is nothing to trace;
  • Playing a sound on the case isn't possible with these generations — that feature only exists on the newest cases with a built-in speaker.

What you can still try

  • Last known location — open Find My and see where your AirPods were last seen. If the earbuds were in the case at the time, the case is probably still somewhere nearby.
  • The logical places — coat pockets, bags, the car, between couch cushions. An empty case is small, light and smooth; it easily slips in somewhere.
  • Think back from the last charging moment — when did you last charge your earbuds? From that moment on, the case was left behind somewhere.

Case really gone: these are your options

Without a case you can't charge your earbuds or re-pair them — so replacing it is unavoidable. You have two routes:

  • Apple — a replacement charging case through Apple's service channel costs €69 to €109, depending on the case type. You get a new unit, but loss isn't covered by AppleCare+, so you always pay the full rate.
  • Refurbished, sold separately — at Earbuds Restore you can buy a genuine, tested single charging case from €23.80, with a 12-month warranty. You replace only what you lost; your own earbuds simply stay in use.

Watch out when choosing: the replacement case must be the same generation and variant as your earbuds. A Lightning case and a USB-C case are not interchangeable, and a Pro case won't work with standard earbuds. Not sure which generation you have? The model number is on the earbuds themselves (it starts with an A), or use our model guide to determine it in three steps.

Pairing a new case with your existing earbuds

A replacement case of the right generation works with your existing earbuds after a simple reset: place the earbuds in the new case, hold the setup button on the back until the light flashes white, and reconnect with your iPhone. After that, the set works as before.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I see my charging case in the Find My app?

Cases of older AirPods generations have no transmitter or speaker of their own and can't report their location. Find My only shows the last known location of the earbuds — an empty case can't be found through the app.

Can I keep using my earbuds without a case?

Temporarily yes, as long as the battery lasts — but charging and re-pairing can only be done through the case. As soon as the earbuds are empty, you need a case to use them again.

Does every charging case work with my earbuds?

No. The case must be exactly the same generation and variant as your earbuds: Lightning and USB-C are not interchangeable, and neither are standard and Pro cases. Check your earbuds' model number before ordering.
