Will a replacement earbud work with my old set?
Share
You have lost one earbud, or maybe the battery of your left or right earbud is not what it used to be. Your other earbud still works fine, so the logical question is: can I simply buy a single earbud and have it work together with my old earbud?
The short answer: yes, you can – but only if you choose the right generation. This applies to wireless earbuds such as Apple AirPods. Combining parts per generation is crucial for proper operation. In this article we explain exactly which combinations do work, which do not, and how to make sure your replacement earbud works perfectly with your existing set.
Why generation and model matter so much
Manufacturers regularly release new generations of earbuds, and although they often look similar, there are important differences under the hood. Each generation has its own chip (such as the H1 or H2), specific firmware, and unique hardware characteristics.
The golden rule: your replacement earbud must be exactly the same generation and the same model as your existing earbud. A 2nd generation earbud cannot work together with a 3rd generation one, even if they might physically fit in the same case.
It is important to understand the difference between the various product lines:
- Standard earbuds – Available in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation. Each with its own design and specifications.
- Pro earbuds – The premium variant with noise cancelling, available in 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation. Not compatible with the standard earbuds.

How to check which model you have first
Before you order a replacement earbud, it is essential to know which generation you currently have. There are two easy ways to find out:
Method 1: Via your phone
- Make sure your earbuds are connected to your phone.
- Go to Settings → Bluetooth.
- Tap the (i) icon next to your earbuds.
- Scroll down to see the model number.
Method 2: Via your charging case or earbud
- Open your charging case and look on the inside of the lid for the model number.
- On the earbud itself, the model number is printed in small letters below the "head".
With this model number you can determine exactly which generation you have. For a complete list of all model numbers and what they mean, check out our model number guide.
Overview per generation – which combinations work and which do not?
Let's look at the rules for combining parts per generation. This helps you understand exactly what does and does not work.
1st and 2nd generation
The 1st and 2nd generation look very similar, but are not interchangeable. The 1st generation has the W1 chip, while the 2nd generation has the newer H1 chip. These chips do not communicate with each other.
- 2nd gen left + 2nd gen right = works
- 1st gen left + 2nd gen right = does not work
Do you have 2nd generation earbuds? Then check out our single 2nd generation parts.
3rd generation
The 3rd generation introduced a completely new design with shorter stems and Spatial Audio. These are only compatible with other 3rd generation earbuds.
- 3rd gen left + 3rd gen right = works
- 3rd gen + 2nd gen = does not work
Check out our range of single 3rd generation parts.
4th generation
The newest standard earbuds, released in 2024, come in two variants: with and without Active Noise Cancellation. Important: these two variants are also not compatible with each other.
- 4th gen (standard) + 4th gen (standard) = works
- 4th gen (ANC) + 4th gen (ANC) = works
- 4th gen (standard) + 4th gen (ANC) = does not work
Check out our single 4th generation parts.
Pro 1st generation
The original Pro earbuds with Active Noise Cancellation and silicone ear tips. These work only together with other Pro 1st generation earbuds. They are not compatible with the standard earbuds or with Pro 2.
- Pro 1 left + Pro 1 right = works
- Pro 1 + Pro 2 = does not work
Check out our single Pro 1st generation parts.
Pro 2nd generation
The newest Pro variant with the H2 chip, improved noise cancellation and Adaptive Audio. Note: there are two versions – with Lightning and with USB-C connection on the case. The earbuds themselves are interchangeable, but the cases are not.
- Pro 2 left + Pro 2 right = works
- Pro 2 + Pro 1 = does not work
Check out our single Pro 2nd generation parts.
Pro 3rd generation
The newest Pro variant with the H2 chip, improved noise cancellation and Adaptive Audio. Note: there is one main version – with USB-C connection on the case (no more Lightning as standard). The earbuds and case belong together and are not interchangeable between generations. In addition, there are new features such as improved sound quality, health functions (such as heart rate measurement) and a refreshed design.
Check out our single Pro 3rd generation parts.
- Pro 3 left + Pro 3 right = works
- Pro 3+ Pro 2 = does not work

Can I mix left and right?
This is a frequently asked question, and the answer is clear: no, this does not work.
Both earbuds in a set form one whole. They constantly communicate with each other and with your charging case via the same chip and firmware. When you try to combine earbuds from different generations, the following happens:
- The earbuds do not recognise each other as a "pair"
- Pairing with your phone fails or is unstable
- Audio can go out of sync between left and right
- Features such as automatic switching between devices do not work
- The battery status is not displayed correctly
In short: mixing generations results in a frustrating experience. Better to invest in a replacement earbud of the right generation – that is guaranteed to work.
How do I pair a replacement earbud with my set?
Found the right replacement earbud? Then pairing is easy:
Step-by-step: pairing a replacement earbud
- 1 Place both earbuds in the case – Your existing earbud and the replacement earbud.
- 2 Close the case – Wait 15 seconds.
- 3 Open the case near your phone – Hold the case close to your phone.
- 4 Hold the setup button – Until the light flashes white.
- 5 Follow the on-screen instructions – Tap "Connect".

Why is a single part cheaper than a complete set?
If you have lost or broken one earbud, you do not need to buy a whole set. A replacement part offers several advantages:
- Saves money – A single part costs a fraction of a complete set.
- More sustainable – Why throw away what still works? Replace only what is broken.
- Keep your existing set – Your case and working earbud simply remain in use.
